When a room feels almost finished but not quite, the answer may be right in front of you: the windows.
Window treatments influence far more than appearance. They shape privacy, glare, temperature, softness, and the quality of daylight moving through your home. They also establish scale. The right drapery can make a ceiling feel taller, an architectural opening feel more intentional, and an otherwise comfortable room feel beautifully complete.
This is Part 4 of our Refresh Your Room series, and I truly believe window treatments are among the most transformative updates you can make without changing the entire space.
The Overlooked Room Refresh
Furniture and artwork tend to receive most of the attention during a room refresh. We notice a sofa, a rug, or a painted wall immediately. Windows, however, quietly influence the entire atmosphere.
Worn, faded, undersized, or poorly proportioned curtains can make a room feel unfinished. Short panels may interrupt the vertical lines of the architecture. Narrow panels may leave the window looking cramped. Lightweight fabric may fail to soften the room or provide the privacy and light control you need.
Replacing those treatments with custom panels creates a more considered feeling almost immediately.
The right treatment should complete the room, not merely cover the window.
At Serendipity Designs, we approach every window as part of the larger interior. We consider the architecture, furnishings, natural light, fabric behavior, and the way you want the room to feel throughout the day.
Start Higher and Wider
One of the simplest ways to improve the proportions of a room is to mount drapery higher and wider than the window frame.
When the rod or track is installed closer to the ceiling, the eye follows the fabric upward. This emphasizes the height of the room and gives the window a more architectural presence. Extending the hardware beyond the sides of the frame also allows the panels to stack outside the glass when open, preserving more of your natural light and view.
This approach is especially effective in living rooms, dining rooms, libraries, and bedrooms with tall windows or generous ceiling heights.
The details matter. The height of the hardware, the finished length of each panel, the amount of fabric fullness, and the way the drapery meets the floor all affect the final result. A difference of even a few inches can change whether a treatment looks tailored or awkward.
With custom drapery, these proportions are resolved before fabrication begins.
Fuller Fabric, More Graceful Movement
Luxury is often felt in the way a material behaves.
A fuller drapery panel has more presence than a flat, skimpy curtain. It creates a graceful hang, richer folds, and a softer transition between the window and the rest of the room. The fabric moves beautifully when opened and closed, while remaining visually substantial when stacked at the sides.
Fabric weight also matters. A heavier textile may require a stronger rod, more supportive hardware, and a carefully selected pleat style. A lighter fabric may benefit from additional fullness or a lining that gives it body.
We evaluate how each textile will move, hang, stretch, and respond to the window. Our goal is not simply to make a panel that fits. Our goal is to give you a treatment that looks beautiful from every angle and continues to perform beautifully over time.

Layering for Beauty and Control
Drapery can provide softness and elegance, but it does not always need to do every job alone.
Layering a shade beneath drapery gives you more control over privacy and daylight while adding another level of texture. Depending on your home and preferences, that second layer may be:
- A classic Roman shade
- A woven wood shade
- A roller shade
- A light-filtering fabric shade
- A blackout shade
- A motorized or battery-operated treatment
A Roman shade beneath full-length panels can create a warm, tailored look in a bedroom or sitting room. Woven woods introduce natural texture and are especially beautiful alongside wood flooring, cabinetry, or organic furnishings. A roller shade offers a clean, understated solution when you want a minimal appearance beneath decorative panels.
Layering also allows you to respond to changing conditions throughout the day. You may want the shade lowered during the brightest afternoon hours while leaving the drapery open. In the evening, you may close both layers for added privacy and comfort.
We can help you determine whether your room needs one treatment or a coordinated system of layers.
Texas Sun and the Importance of Lining
In North Texas, natural light is one of a home’s greatest assets, and one of its most demanding design considerations.
Strong sunlight can create glare on television screens, warm a room quickly, fade upholstery, and place stress on delicate textiles. The right lining helps protect your interiors while allowing you to control the atmosphere.
A light-filtering lining softens direct sunlight and creates a warm, welcoming glow. This can be ideal for living rooms, breakfast areas, and spaces where you want to preserve a bright, natural feeling without harsh glare.
Blackout lining is often the better choice for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. It supports deeper rest, improves viewing conditions, and provides a greater sense of privacy. In some applications, an interlining can add extra body, fullness, and insulation to the drapery.
There is no single lining that is right for every room. The best choice depends on the window’s orientation, the room’s purpose, the fabric selected, and how much light control you prefer.
Custom Window Treatments, Down to the Inch
Off-the-shelf curtains may be convenient, but they cannot account for the individual details of your home.
At Serendipity Designs, every panel is fabricated to the exact inch. We consider:
- The precise height and width of the window
- The relationship between the window and surrounding architecture
- Fabric weight and pattern scale
- Desired fullness
- Pleat or heading style
- Hardware strength and finish
- Lining and interlining requirements
- How the treatment will open, close, and stack
- Installation conditions and final floor clearance
Pleated headers, including pinch pleats, European pleats, and ripplefold styles, create different expressions. A traditional room may call for a structured pinch pleat, while a contemporary interior may be better suited to a clean ripplefold. Decorative banding, leading-edge details, cornices, and tailored valances can add another layer of personality.
Your ideas are listened to, refined, and translated carefully into a finished result.
That level of precision is what distinguishes custom window treatments from a temporary purchase.

A Treatment for Every Room
Your home does not need the same window treatment in every space.
In a living room, you may want drapery that frames the architecture and softens strong daylight. In a bedroom, blackout lining and layered shades may be more important than preserving a completely open view. A dining room may benefit from decorative panels with a more formal pleat, while a kitchen may call for a practical Roman or roller shade.
For large or hard-to-reach windows, motorization can offer effortless control. Motorized and battery-operated shades are especially helpful when you want to adjust several windows at once or manage daylight without interrupting the room’s design.
We work with interior designers, architects, and homeowners throughout Dallas, Richardson, Plano, and Frisco to develop treatments that respect the room’s existing creative direction. We join your team, understand the larger vision, and help ensure that the fabrication and installation support it accurately.

Begin with a Specialized Consultation
A successful window treatment begins long before the fabric is cut.
During a specialized consultation, we look carefully at your windows, architecture, furnishings, privacy needs, light exposure, and desired atmosphere. This is also the time to discuss measurements, fabric behavior, lining, hardware, operation, and installation.
Our initial consultations are paid professional appointments because they establish the accuracy and clarity needed for a high-end custom project. You leave with a more informed understanding of what your room requires and how the details can come together.
If your windows feel too bright, too exposed, too bare, or simply unfinished, a thoughtful treatment may be the room refresh you have been overlooking.
Transform your space with custom window treatments designed for the way you live.
